Tips & Tricks

Optimal Watering

Perfect Light Conditions

  • Be mindful of the media you use! Remember orchids like to dry out a little before they get wet again. If using gravel, you might have to water a lot more compared to coconut husk, peat or tree bark.
  • Amount of sunlight plays an important role with most orchids. Your leaves should usually indicate the amount of sunlight your plant requires. The THINNER the leaf, the more sunlight it can handle, the THICKER the leaf, the more shade it requires.
  • If your plant has the perfect amount of light, the leaves should be a lime green colour. This ensures maximum flowering. Dark green leaves can sometimes indicate too much shade/fertilizer. This can prevent the plant from maximum flowering. Too much sunlight will cause the plant to burn and turn yellow then black.
  • Keep your plants in a well-ventilated area. This ensures less pest and diseases.
  • Be a clean freak! Sterilize tools when you can, especially during propagation or harvesting.
  • The soluble fertilizers and chemicals used at SSO can be mixed together to save you time and effort. Please be carful with ratios and measurements used.
  • Keep Mokaras, arandas, terete & semi terete vandas in pots or on short stakes to induce flowers faster. The longer the stake or tree the longer you go without flowers.
