Phalaenopsis are a genus of orchids also known as the moth orchid. Now, usually found in Supermarkets all around the globe. These plants have colourful petals, large leathery leaves, and long epiphytic ariel roots. They are great pot plants with stunning flowers that are unfortunately unpopular in Fiji. Due to the high humidity and heavy rainfall experienced during Fiji’s rainy season people often experience that their plants die around this time because of sitting water in the axel of the plants leaves leading to soft leaf rot and ultimately, death of plants. SSO grow these plants under strict cultivation rules. An 80% waterproof shade cloth is used to prevent any heavy afternoon rains and a strict watering schedule which happens from only 7am-10am. The Phalaenopsis plant also has a clear dormant period in Fiji. Temperature is the trigger for flower spikes and a couple of cool nights during the winter period should initiate it. Once it does flower though, you will have beautiful blooms that can last up to 3 or even 4 months!
