Mokaras are Monopodial orchids (grow vertically) that send out ariel roots. They are hybrid plants, produced by crossing three genera called Vanda, Ascocentrum and Arachnis. They have a growth habit virtually identical to Vanda orchids and belong to a large group of orchids called the Vanda Alliance. These varieties are able to withstand more sunlight hence the name labelled in Fiji as ‘’sun vanda’’. These varieties are known for their cut-flower abilities but mainly for their striking colours, ranging from yellow, oranges, blues, whites, purples, reds and spotted. These plants also don’t seem to have a clear dormant period allowing year-round colourful blooms in your garden or arrangements. Because these orchids don’t have pseudobulbs that retain water, these plants are watered more often than other orchids. On the western part of Fiji it is advised to water these plants almost everyday in the morning. These plants could be potted with coconut husk chips as a media or they will do fine on some sort of support e.g a hard-wood stake or tree/fern tree. These orchids can be propagated by cutting
