FSA BACKGROUND

The Floriculture Support Association (FSA), a non-profit organization, was established in 2013 by a group of horticulturists, growers, florists, and entrepreneurs. Initially, FSA’s primary role was to take over and manage the “cut-flower out-grower program” from South Sea Orchids (SSO). This program, launched by SSO in the mid-90s, aimed to empower mostly women by offering them the opportunity to grow cut-flower orchids and anthuriums in their backyards, enabling them to earn an income without having to leave their homes.

By 2013, the number of growers had exceeded 200, placing significant strain on SSO, which led to the creation of FSA. Since then, FSA has handled all administrative tasks and grower facilitation. Today, FSA boasts over 400 members involved in all aspects of the floriculture industry, including growers, wholesalers, and florists, with FSA serving as the crucial link in the value chain.

FSA also provides specialized services and products, such as fertilizers and subsidized planting material, to meet growers’ needs. In collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Pacific Island Farmers Organisation Network (PIFON), and SSO, FSA organizes workshops, annual national forums, and floriculture fairs to enhance the floriculture industry and create more opportunities for its members.

Over the years, there has been a decrease in the number of growers, mainly because many have chosen to continue their businesses independently or start other ventures. Some have also found it more profitable to sell plants directly.

FSA works closely with SSO to implement and monitor ongoing projects and is continually seeking new partners to help boost the floriculture industry and support its members.
